1. a constellation near the celestial equator, that contains the extremely bright stars Betelgeuse and Rigel; Great Hunter. To the ancients it suggested a man wearing a belt and a sword, and holding a shield and a club.
2. Greek Mythology. a giant hunter of great strength, who was slain by Artemis. After his death Orion was supposedly placed in the heavens with his belt and sword.
